About the Charity

Gallop and Grind is a hugely successful charity duathlon which has been held annually in Fort William for the last three years raising in excess of £105,000 for our local charity, Cancer Care in the Highlands.

The inspiration behind the event is Sharon Fraser, a young mother of four boys from Invergarry who wanted to 'give something back' in appreciation of her care whilst ill with cancer. Sharon sadly passed away in December 2008, however it was her expressed wish that the Gallop and Grind duathlon continue annually to raise funds to offer support and care for those affected by cancer and their families living in the Highlands.

Cancer Care in the Highlands became a registered charity in March 2009 (SC040321) and the aim of the charity, as outlined in our constitution, is to support the needs of those affected by cancer in the Highlands through raising funds to enhance and develop their care and that of their families. The charity is based in Fort William and has four enthusiastic Trustees committed to pusuing the aims of the constitution.

To date, money raised from the Gallop and Grind event has been donated to the Belford Hospital in Fort William to support the recruitment of a rural cancer support worker. In addition, funds donated to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness facilitated the refurbishment of accommodation for relatives and the purchase of a motomed bike to aid rehabilitation following cancer treatment and Crocus charity in Inverness has received a donation to support their work with children.

This years Gallop and Grind event is being organised independently by a small group of enthusiatic volunteers and in order to build on the success of previous years we are looking to increase the number of participants and donations received to help make Sharon's vision a continuing reality.
